For more than a year, the state of Florida failed to do national background checks on people applying for concealed carry permits.
The Agriculture Department, run by Adam Putnam who is now campaigning for the Republican nomination for governor, was in charge. He is openly in favor of growing the number of people in Florida carrying firearms and has been supported by the NRA and donors such as Publix.
Publix’s contributions to Putnam stirred a state-wide outcry, die-ins and a boycot. The company has since announced it is suspending its contributions to political candidates.
How could the state go an entire year without background checks? PBS has the full story.
