Florida Democrats Stand Behind Pelosi’s Impeachment Inquiry
Florida Democrats, from state party Chair Terrie Rizzo to Collier County Chair Annisa Karim, expressed their support of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to open a formal impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump Tuesday.
Pelosi accused Trump with betraying his oath of office and the nation’s security by seeking to enlist a foreign power to tarnish a rival for his own political gain.
Pelosi’s declaration, after months of reticence by Democrats who had feared the political consequences of impeaching a president many of them long ago concluded was unfit for office, was a stunning turn that set the stage for a history-making and exceedingly bitter confrontation between the Democrat-led House and a defiant president who has thumbed his nose at institutional norms.
“Today Speaker Nancy Pelosi took the necessary step to safeguard our democracy from tyranny,” Rizzo said. “A formal impeachment inquiry is a serious step, but President Donald Trump’s blatant actions while in office have left the Speaker and the House of Representatives no choice. Our Constitution designed these proceedings to ensure that presidents are held accountable to the public and determine whether the President of the United States had engaged in illegal activity. This isn’t about Democrats or Republicans, this is about protecting our democracy and our country.”
Rizzo’s comments were echoed by Collier Chair Annisa Karim:
“I fully support the bold steps taken by Speaker Nancy Pelosi in sanctioning an impeachment inquiry. As a country, we must protect the lawful sanctity of the Office of the President. Speaker Pelosi has invoked her responsibility to protect the constitution and President Trump, by his own actions, has invited her to take this important step.”
